Penumbra: Overture (2007, Frictional Software)

This game was the scary, creepy addition to the Humble Indie Bundle. Sorry for my bad job at playing it. It’s now open source:

http://github.com/FrictionalGames

Or you can show your support for the developer and buy the game and its sequels!

http://www.penumbragame.com/ageGate.php

Penumbra: Overture is the first in a series of episodic games developed by Swedish developer Frictional Games. It was originally intended as the first episode of a trilogy. With the announcement of the second episode, Penumbra: Black Plague, it was stated that the second game would be the final chapter. However, an expansion has been released since then: Penumbra: Requiem, giving the series a third chapter, although not continuing the story in any way.

Although Frictional Games describes Penumbra: Overture as a first-person adventure, the game blends the genres of survival horror, first-person shooter, and adventure. The use of Newton Game Dynamics emphasizes physics-based puzzles as well as physics-based combat. The game also takes advantage of advanced artificial intelligence to respond realistically to noises and light, creating stealth-based gameplay.
There are no firearms in the game, so during combat the player is limited to improvised melee fighting with a pickaxe, or throwing objects at attacking creatures. The game is designed to emphasize stealth and avoidance over direct conflict. For example, Philip can close doors behind him to temporarily hold off attacking enemies.
The game’s main focus is on exploration and classic adventure game object interaction: examining and collecting objects and using them to solve puzzles.

Set in the year 2000, Penumbra: Overture follows the story of Philip, a thirty-year-old physicist whose mother has recently died. After receiving a mysterious letter from his supposedly dead father, Philip follows a series of clues that lead to him to a mysterious location in uninhabited northern Greenland. The harsh cold forces him to take shelter in an abandoned mine. Unfortunately, the mine’s entrance collapses as he enters it, and he is forced to move deeper inside. Within the mine, Philip discovers diary extracts written by a scientist of some sort, who was alone and gradually resorted to eating cave-dwelling spiders as an alternative food source as his supplies diminished. The unknown person also describes discovering a psychoactive toxin in the spiders and deduced that, after eight months of consuming them in the mine, it was beginning to have an effect on him, physically. Philip also begins receiving radio messages from Tom “Red” Redwood, a man driven insane by cabin fever. Red promises that if he is found, he will give Philip answers. The game follows Philip as he descends deeper into the mines in search of Red while unraveling the secrets of the mine’s previous and current inhabitants.
Philip quickly discovers that the mine is inhabited by an ecosystem of abnormally large and hostile animals: dogs, giant spiders, and gargantuan earthworms among others. Abandoned outposts and various scattered papers found throughout the mine indicate that a secret society is studying some unusual phenomena inside the mines.
Following clues and solving various puzzles, Philip eventually comes to an area deep within the mine where Red is waiting for him. Red waits inside an incinerator where he begs Philip to kill him. With no other option, Philip activates the incinerator and amongst Red’s remains, he finds items he needs to progress into a new area of the mine which is identified as “The Shelter”. Once inside, Philip notices what appears to be a human watching him. Philip approaches the figure, but the lighting is suddenly extinguished and Philip is knocked out and dragged away.

Turisas – Miklagard Overture

Artist: Turisas
Album: The Vangarian way

Long have I drifted without a course
A rudderless ship I have sailed
The Nile just keeps flowing without a source
Maybe all the seekers just failed?

To Holmgard and beyond
In search of a bond
Far from home I’ve come
But the road has just begun

Breathing history
Veiled in mystery
The sublime
The greatest of our time
Tsargrad!

“Come with us to the south
Write your name on our roll”
I was told;

Konstantinopolis
Sui generis
The saints and emperors
Of bygone centuries
The man-made birds in their trees
Out load their paean rings
Immortality!

In astonishing colours the East meets the West
The hill-banks arise in their green
In wonder I sit on my empty chest
As we glide down the strait in between

To Holmgard and beyond
In search of a bond
Distant church bells toll
For their god they chant and troll

Breathing history
Veiled in mystery
The sublime
The greatest of our time
Tsargrad!

The Norwegian of rank
In the court of The Prince
I was convinced

Konstantinopolis
Ten gates to eternity
Seen all for centuries
Your inconquerable walls
Your temples and your halls
See all, hear all, know it all

My sun rose in the North and now sets in the South
The Golden Horn lives up to its name
From tower to tower a chain guards its mouth
Unbreakable, they claim

To Holmgard and beyond
In a search of a bond
Adventures lie ahead
Many knots lie unravelled on my thread

Breathing history
Veiled in mystery
The sublime
The greatest of our time
Tsargrad!

Konstantinopolis
Queen of the cities
Your welcoming smile
Made all worthwhile
The sweat and the pain

Bathing in gold
Endless rooftops unfold
The sun sets for a while just to rise again

Great halls
Great halls
Greatest of all, Miklagard

1812 overture for organ accompanied by 1000 balloon globota

Was this substitute for real cannon too mad? It’s difficult to find a good transcription of the 1812 Overture but this one is a little fun even if Hugh didn’t find the stop for the bells. A good excuse to do it again!

A group of organ builders has taken exception to this performance on the grounds that they fear that we will “hasten the demise of pipe organ music as a serious art”. However, when after a long and serious performance with items of considerably heavier weight than are often presented at organ recitals a most sober headmaster comments:
“Congratulations on an excellent concert yesterday. Nicely informal but with some excellent organ music and the bangs livened up a tired 7 year old and saw him away enthusiastically”, we know that we are on the right track.

So please sit back and let this madness entertain!

The explosions were fun and a little unconventional – the audio recording is more spectacular to hear
http://www.jungleboffin.com/mp3/organ/5-manual/fun1812.mp3
than this poor video representation – and enjoyed by everyone in this otherwise serious recital including Vierne II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayQI9WyS8Hw where the organ showed its full colours.

The apparent buffoonery here is part of a series of concerts featuring the most profound of French romantic repertoire and is intended to bring a sense of fun into a world which can take itself altogether too seriously.

If you do download the MP3 please do beware the bangs – they were serious (although they should have been better) this was no balloons at a childrens’ party.

The videoing . . . the camera was given to an unsuspecting member of the audience . . . and was possibly as whacky as the event itself.

This sort of performance won’t be repeated in a hurry but finished off a splendid day celebrating 25 years of concerts and public opening of the historic house. After this recital of Vierne, Demessieux, Durufle and Germani, a member of our audience went to a concert hall recital later in the week. She said it was disappointing because the organist at the concert played what he thought the audience wanted to hear rather than what he wanted to play. That’s the difference here!

Next time, however, we will ensure that all the white balloons burst as the effect was probably only 20% here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOAbmIOU-Ek was our first experiment.

The vagueness of the presenter followed a week of working nearly night and day to finish the enlarging of the organ to a massive 5 manual specification especially for this series of concerts showing off the largest of the organ repertoire, rarely able to be heard outside the largest of European cathedrals. The setting of this organ in a historic house enables the detail of the music to be heard intimately by the audience rather than being lost in the heights of gothic arches.

Ebay dropship and eBay Powersellers

http://www.ebaypowersellerpro.info/ 1. Thorough market research is the foundation for success Meticulous market research doubles your chances of making a tidy profit from the wholesale goods you buy. Start off with a list of 5-10 different ideas. Then check completed listings searches on eBay to see what the item generally sells for and the sell-through rate for each one. Use Yahoo’s free keyword tool http://inventory.overture.com to find out how many people are searching Yahoo for your product per month. You can double this figure for Google. Add the numbers together. If there are ten thousand or more searches per month for an item, this indicates a healthy market. 2. Calculate the REAL cost of your item One big reason why people fail at the wholesale game is that they don’t do the numbers. In other words, they don’t treat wholesale like a real business. To accurately discover your true profit potential on an item, you need to add the shipping cost and insurance, eBay fees (or equivalent for other advertising), Paypal and/or credit card fees (these can be a real profit killer), packaging costs and labor involved packaging, and any storage costs to the cost of your item. 3. Verify ALL suppliers found on the Internet Getting caught out by scammers is a common stumbling block for people new to wholesale. If you are searching for suppliers off your own bat (rather than using a wholesale directory like SaleHoo), it is CRITICAL to check authenticity before making a purchase. Always take the time to the reasons for liquidation and closeout sales before you buy. Liquidation and Closeout sales can be a fantastic source for cheap products, but you usually have to buy by the pallet load and these can sometimes include broken or returned goods that aren’t in saleable condition. To be safe, ask specifically whether broken items and returns are included before you buy. 6. Negotiate on shipping and save Shipping economically is critical to importing success. Profits can easily get swamped in shipping costs, so take time to get a good deal on shipping. If possible, negotiate CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight) or DDP (Delivery, duty paid) shipping terms with your supplier as this takes much of the risk – not to mention organization – off your shoulders. FOB (Freight on Board) is the most common shipping term, but don’t be afraid to negotiate for better. 7. Drop shipping – can you really afford it?Drop shipping sounds great in theory – someone taking care of packaging, wrapping and postage – but it can be difficult to profit from this method. Think about it, drop shipping can add another $2-10 to your costs – sometimes even 10% of the cost of the item. By the time you add in eBay fees and any other costs, you may find it is not worth it. 8. Warehouse storage checklistAsset management is the most important consideration when locating warehousing to store your items. Believe it or not, items can go missing while in storage, causing massive disruption for you. When comparing warehouses, ask questions specifically on how you will authorize the release of stock (by phone or fax?), what will happen if you need to cancel an order, frequency of damage claims, dust management, and whether there is an area you can use to photograph items. 9. Powerseller wealth It’s a fact – eBay powersellers are able to command higher prices for their items than ordinary eBay sellers. To get the best profits on your wholesale items, you need to aim to get and maintain powerseller status. 10. Growth with a website and eBay store The way to increase profits from wholesale is to build your own website and/or open an eBay store. This allows you to cross sell items plus it also makes it easier for people to find what they are looking for. For example, if you sell shoes, then customers can easily navigate to browse all black shoes in size 9 and so on. Always include a sentence at the bottom of your descriptions encouraging visitors to check out your other listings – most people will.If you are looking for genuine and trusted wholesale suppliers then look no further than SaleHoo! SaleHoo’s directory contains over 4000 drop ship, wholesale and closeout suppliers that are independently reviewed and rated by eBay Powersellers and Industry experts. SaleHoo also purchases off them and reviews each supplier in depth afterwards.
